It's a great question, and an important question. With the loss of traditional jobs and a move to service-industry economy in North America, personal training is a way to earn a relatively good living while helping others.

In my opinion, there is a huge shortage of good trainers in the workforce.

Now it's relatively easy to become a certified personal trainer. Simply look up one of the popular certifications (ACE, NSCA-CPT, or whatever certification the gym you want to work at requires), get their study materials, and then pass their test. Then you certified and can be a trainer. That's it. (So it's easy to see why there are so many bad trainers out there. Remember that the more people the organizations certify, the more $$$ they make...)

However, to become a good trainer, you will need to learn much, much more and invest far more time and education than you need to just get a quick certification.

You will need to start by mastering the basics such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and an introduction to sports medicine.

For without this foundation, it is easy for a trainer to fall for the latest gimmicks and fads. If you don't know how the central nervous system controls the muscles, then standing on a wobbling board while doing biceps curls with a rubber band while reciting your ABC's backwards might seem like a good idea. But if you have a strong education in the foundations, then you'll take one look at that stuff and realize its bunk.

Fortunately, you can learn as much studying on your own as you could by being enrolled in a University Kinesiology program.

The plus side of going to University is that you will get a recognized degree and it also happens that a University or College degree (any subject however) is a pre-requisite for possibly the most recognized certification, that of the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

However, the obvious downsides of University are the required investments in time and money. You must study on the University schedule and the fees are substantial.

One additional downside to a University education is the heavy emphasis placed on aerobic exercise science. Not only has this lead to the "You must do aerobics for fat loss" mentality, but also to the ill-advised "high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets are best for fat loss and health" nutrition recommendations.

While some coaches regard the formal education process as un-necessary, and feel that all the requisite knowledge can be gained on their own and in the trenches, I am a strong supporter of a formal education - provided the quality of education is high. Perhaps these coaches attended less than stellar Kinesiology programs (which I know do exist).

However, the education that I attained from McMaster University is without a doubt the reason for the quality of my programs and the level of my knowledge. Most influential was the neuromuscular physiology course taught to me by Dr. Digby Sale at McMaster University. Giving the Xenadrine EFX product the benefit of the doubt wasn't difficult for me because although their formula seemed somewhat light from an ingredient quality perspective, I had to give them kudos for their conceptual efforts.

The manufacturers of Xenadrine EFX have incorporated some fancy names for the proprietary blends they used like Isotherm and Thermodyne, keeping in the back of your mind they are just names and don't have any influence on the performance of the formula. They also decided to utilize synonyms that had a more appealing or technical look to them instead of using the more common names, for instance the 3,3,45, 7-pentahydroxy-flavone, which is commonly known as Quercetin.

I also have considerable concern regarding their label claim that Xenadrine EFX is clinically proven, you would assume that this meant proven to support weight loss or management and the ability to burn fat. After recognizing this I sourced the clinical papers they so kindly made available on their web site. After reviewing the papers, it was clear that such a label claim could not be supported, and that it was a bit confusing to the consumer. What the label could say is Clinically Proven to be Safe for 14 days, which reflects the design of the Xenadrine EFX papers. The research doesnt show any evidence of increasing the rate of fat lipolysis or any catalytic potential, it does show an increase in resting heart rate and thermogenic potential, supporting greater calories utilized. This evidence may support the prevention of weight gain under the direction of a controlled diet and exercise program. They seem to state the obvious in two of the papers available; Weight control is mandated by two methods: reducing energy intake or increasing energy expenditure now this is profound! In order to truly raise basal metabolic activity in order to burn fat is to directly stimulate or support the Thyroid hormone T3, which effectively oxidizes fat producing energy. This is one of the weaknesses of the Xenadrine EFX formula. There is no component(s) in Xenadrine EFX to support fat metabolism directly.

After a further evaluation of the formula I agree with the utilization of the -sympathicomimetics, which are a blend of adrenergic amines (synephrine, n-methyltryamine, hordinine, octopamine, tyramine) in the Bitter Orange extract. This will facilitate a greater potential for the utilization of energy substrates. Coupled with the energy yielding Seropro (cocoa extract yielding theobromine), which stimulates but doesnt over excite the central nervous system or interfere by extending the cyclic adenosine monphosphate levels, which may in turn cause irritability or sleeplessness. Cytodyne should be commended for the inclusion of these ingredients in their product.

On the other hand the composition of the remaining active ingredients for the Xenadrine EFX formula doesn't make as much sense structure function wise. I see an extreme potential for over stimulation from neurotransmitter precursors; Tyroplex (l-tyrosine, acetyl-l-tyrosine), they are mainly for the production of a catacholamine known as norepinephrine an excitatory neurotransmitter that has no effect on fat metabolism and is generally inactivated by monoamine oxidase in the cell. Combined with the abundance of caffeine (green tea extract, yerbe mate), one may experience a feeling a trusty buzz. This combination could produce negative sensitivity; sleeplessness, irritability, and nervous energy that may leave a user feeling uncomfortable. If your sensitive to stimulants you should keep this in mind if you are considering taking any stimulant based weight loss product.

As a final observation, I noticed that the ingredient declaration and label copy did not support any of the patented or copyrighted raw materials that you often find in other top notch weight loss products. Inclusion of such ingredients often supports some clinical validation for effectiveness and technical support for credibility; this tells me that this probably did not occur because of production budgetary restrictions. This is where Xenadrine EFX falls a bit short. I wish they had put a bit more focus on quality and not necessarily quantity of ingredients.

In conclusion, the Xenadrine EFX by formula evaluation is a very respectable product but it has some slight loose ends from an ingredient quality standpoint. All in all, if you are watching your diet and doing some form of regular exercise you should find Xenadrine EFX to be helpful in rounding out your program.

What If You Gained 10 Pounds This Weekend?

I always marvel at the reports I get from men and women who claim to have gained 10 pounds over a weekend. In truth, this is next to impossible. It doesn't matter how much you try to pig out, you just couldn't gain 10 pounds of fat in a weekend. Not even 5 pounds. Nor 3. Maybe 1, but no more.

So despite how much weight you worry you are going to gain this Easter weekend, the truth is, it's tough to actually gain pounds of fat in a weekend.

Take for example the traditional notion that there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat. To even gain 3 pounds of fat over a weekend, you'd need to consume an extra 10,500 calories. Now that's tough. In fact, that's about the number of calories in 19 Big Mac's.

Now please tell me you don't eat 19 Big Mac's in a weekend?

If you do, then you have trouble. Plus, that doesn't take into account the 1500-2000 calories a normal person burns each day. So over a 3 day weekend, you'd have to throw another 10 Big Macs into your diet to gain the 3 pounds in one weekend for our example. So let me know how eating 29 Big Macs in 3 days turns out.

I really hope no one tries that!

Also, take a look at this study. Researchers from Virginia State University gave men an extra 1000 calories per day for 8 weeks. For most people, that would be a tough challenge to eat that many extra calories unless they were eating all types of junk food.

By the end of the 8 week study, the men gained an extra 11 pounds. That's 11 pounds after 8 weeks of "pigging out", not just a weekend where they went to the Outback Steakhouse and had a "Blooming Onion".

What most people see on the scale after a weekend of "road trip eating" is just an increase in fluid retention due to the high-sodium and high-carbohydrate diet, as well as some fat (but certainly not 10 pounds of it in only 48 hours).

So the next time you get off track with your weekend eating and are shocked to discover that you've gained 10 pounds, just take a deep breath and realize that is not an accurate measurement of the real damage.

If you get off track, just focus on getting back in charge of your nutrition, sticking to whole, natural foods, and cutting out the high-sodium, high-carbohydrate processed snacks. This shouldn't be too hard, because you'll probably feel terrible from the weekend's junk food.

In addition to returning to fruits, vegetables, nuts, and protein for your meals during the week, make sure to add three total body resistance training workouts and 3 interval cardio workouts to help you burn fat and return to your normal weight.

Start with a bodyweight warm up, then do resistance training supersets to boost your metabolism, and then finish the workout with fat burning interval training.

But before I write about how this can be done, let me say that I suggest you give yourself more time to lose 40 lbs. A month will require some drastic measures. But if you're adamant about it, read on. You need to be aware that in order to lose 40 pounds in 30 days, you need to create a massive calorie deficit. This isn't something which is easily done. It's possible to do this in just 2 ways:

1. Use a detox diet - A detox diet cleanses your body of a great deal of undigested pounds and helps you to create a calorie deficit. A detox diet includes drinking a lot of fluids, usually water and fruit juice (fresh juice). This kind of diet flushes you out and helps to stave off hunger. In this way it's possible to lose 40 pounds fast. In a month, it can be done. However, you need to be aware that this may not be the healthiest thing to do. Using a detox diet for too long can be detrimental to the body since you're not eating a lot of necessary nutrients. It's great for fast weight loss, but don't use it for too long.

2. The second way to lose 40 lbs in a month is to create the necessary calorie deficit by working out a lot and eating in moderation. More is Not Better - Better Is Better!

Training is a great thing so it is easy to see why so many fall into the all too common 'more is better' trap. Like with many things in life, training should focus on quality over quantity. Your goal is not to train constantly more - not longer, not more frequently. Your focus is to improve your training - to increase your intensity by doing more and better in the time you have.

The fact of the matter is that marathon weight training workouts make no physiological sense. They work completely against how your body is designed to function in terms of packing on muscle. There is a good reason for keeping your workouts no longer than 45 minutes to an hour. Quite simply your testosterone levels begin to drop off dramatically after 45 minutes meaning that your output after this time is probably not going to be at the level required to stimulate new growth but rather is simply going to tax your body and eat into your recovery capacity. This means that your body will need to spend a great deal more resources repairing itself to where it was, an equilibrium level, leaving LESS to actually put towards NEW growth. Whilst training does tear down muscle fibres so they adapt and grow stronger, it is only a means to an end. The ultimate goal is to stimulate this adaptive response not see how much muscle tissue you can annihilate into oblivion.

Intensity is not about collapsing and puking every time you train, it is a measure of the quality work and effort you put in to maximise the adaptive response whilst hitting the correct muscles safely with good technique that improves their function as well as appearance. Training does not exist in a vacuum and it is also useful to consider and apply the concept of intensity and quality effort into the other vital areas such as nutrition and lifestyle that ultimately determine your success in achieving a lean muscular physique.

Taking the time to study and understand nutrition as well as the focus and discipline to shop, prepare and eat clean food is definitely an area where so many people lack the necessary intensity to support and maximise the adaptive response created in the gym. Making time to take care of your body and being organised to get enough sleep to ensure your body receives enough growth hormone and muscle building rest requires effort and you will need to apply yourself exactly as you drive yourself to train harder. Be honest. If your progress is stalling because you are neglecting other areas, more training is not the answer. You simply need to get better at all the things that matter. More is not better. Better is better.
